Mindfulness meditation practice improved test scores on graduate exams

UC California at Santa Barbara ran a double blind study where they had students meditate for 45 minutes 4 times a week. They were taught basic mindfulness meditation techniques by professional meditation teachers. They were given exercises on working with sensations, emotions and thoughts. The control group was given nutritional education.

When the two groups took the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) the group who was taught meditation saw their average scores go from 460 to 520, a significant improvement. The nutrition trained group saw no change in their scores.

The researchers pointed out in their conclusion that you can purchase a $1299 GRE prep course and cram all night with Adderal or you can learn to meditate. Both improved the scores about the same amount and meditation is free!

Mindfulness meditation is one of the most effective non-medication ways to work with many mental health complaints including adult ADHD, depression, anxiety and mood disorders. But you don’t need to have a mental health complaint to benefit from mindfulness meditation. When we are mindful, present and aware in our daily life we automatically experience more joy and happiness.
