Private Practice Counselor Supervision for Mental Health Professionals

You Can Learn To Be Successful, Helpful and Profitable

Psychotherapy is a wonderful and satisfying line of work if you learn how to be a good clinician and develop good skills to take care of yourself while you take care of others.

It can also be a good business if you learn the skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur and business owner.

My History and Learning Curve

When I started private practice in 1999 I was a struggling therapist, not making enough money, and depending on low fee clients and later on insurance company reimbursements in order to pay the bills.

Over the ensuing 14 years I logged a lot of client hours, had excellent supervisors and learned a lot about the Art of Psychotherapy, in community mental health, school-based mental health and in the private practice counseling setting.

I also worked as a psychiatric assessor for several Denver area hospitals. The emergency room psychiatric assessment work was an excellent training ground. I got to learn from psychiatrists and other medical professionals and learned how to help the severely mentally ill.

I now supervise interns who are collecting hours for licensure as well as consult with other psychotherapists on their cases. I can teach you:

  • To become a skillful and effective clinician,
  • To be of benefit to your clients and meet them in a way that facilitates transformation
  • To take care of yourself in the process in order to avoid burnout

Career Management

What I didn’t learn in my years of training and struggled to find in supervisors and consultants was someone who could teach me to successfully market my skills and considerable experience in the way that would allow me to make a good living in the counseling field while doing this valuable work of helping people.

When I decided I wanted to change and started looking for a consultant to help me, I had 3 failed consultant attempts before I found someone who could help me transition from just “good psychotherapist” to “good psychotherapist and successful entrepreneur.”

I wasted a lot of time and money on those failed consultants. However I did learn a lot about what works as well as what doesn’t work.

I want to save you the heartache and expense you suffered and get you the help and direction you need from the start. Not only can I guild you in your development as a mental health professional but I can also guide you in building your successful private practice.

From a former Supervisee:

Larry served as my clinical supervisor for two years (2011-2013) while I was pursuing my Licensed Professional Counselor designation. Larry is an excellent clinician and supervisor, providing honest and straightforward feedback. He offers deep insight into cases and thought-provoking ideas around treatment and clinical development. His collaborative and easy-going style creates an open atmosphere in which I felt safe to share my thoughts and emotions freely. He is knowledgeable, wise, and has a great sense of humor. There was a very balanced feel to our supervision process; Larry held me accountable without micromanaging me, always accepting and encouraging me along the way. Larry’s guidance has been an instrumental part of my growth process as both a clinician and a person, and he continues to be an invaluable professional resource. I highly recommend him as a clinical supervisor or therapist.

Research consistently shows that the single most important factor for a client to have successful psychotherapy is the quality of the relationship between therapist and client. It is not just learning a lot of techniques and bringing a full toolbox to the session.

What successful training psychotherapy training teaches is how to be emotionally, intimately and genuinely present with clients no matter how difficult their situation is; to meet them with unconditional positive regard and to honor their struggle. When you can do that you can help them facilitate change.

I Can Teach You How To Succeed

You learn how to be present with your clients in this deep way through a mixture of good psychotherapy principles, working on yourself to remove your own judgment and reactivity, and learning about mindfulness, and the energetic qualities of how people relate to each other.

Getting supervision from me provides you the opportunity to learn the subtle qualities needed to be a successful healer and counselor to your clients.
